Fall is the best season to be a toddler. There are leaves to crunch, pumpkins to poke, and the weather is finally nice enough to live outside again.

My son is 16 months old, and we keep screens to a minimum around here. There's no tablet, just the occasional low-stim show on the TV when mama really needs to get something done. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding screens before 18 months, except for video chatting,ยน so I'm always hunting for simple activities that keep little hands busy instead. This is his first fall as a real, walking, into-everything toddler, so here's our fall bucket list for this year. Most activities use things you already have, and a few use affordable, nontoxic supplies worth keeping on hand all season.

A quick safety note: little ones put everything in their mouths. Always supervise, and skip small items like acorns, dried corn, and beans for kids under 3. They're choking hazards.

Outdoor Fall Activities

The classic for a reason. Rake a small pile and let them crunch, toss, and dive. A toddler-sized rake makes them feel like the ultimate helper.

Toddlers love to move stuff from point A to point B. A mini wheelbarrow filled with leaves or small pumpkins is entertainment for an hour. This set comes with a rake too.

Nature Walk Treasure Basket

Give your toddler a little bag or basket and collect big leaves, pinecones, and sticks on a walk. It's sneaky practice for language as you name everything you find.

Pumpkin Patch Outing

Skip the crowded weekend and go on a weekday morning. Let them pick their own "baby pumpkin" to bring home for the activities below. And yes, you need the cute outfit for the photos:

Pumpkin Activities

Pumpkin Painting (No Carving Required)

Mini pumpkins plus nontoxic paint equals a perfect toddler craft. These paints are vegetable-based, so you don't have to panic when a brush ends up in someone's mouth.

Pumpkin Washing Station

Fill a water table with a little water, add a few small pumpkins and a scrub brush, and let them "clean." It's pure sensory joy for young toddlers.

Pumpkin Hammering (Ages 2+)

Push golf tees into a pumpkin with a wooden toy hammer. It's great for fine motor skills once they're a little older.

Sensory and Craft Activities

Fill a bin with big leaves, pinecones, and mini pumpkins, and let them scoop and dump. Rotate what's inside to keep it fresh all season.

Pumpkin Spice Playdough

Homemade playdough with cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice smells like fall, and you know exactly what's in it. Add wooden tools for extra fun.

Stick leaves onto clear contact paper, fold it over, and hang it in a window. It's mess-free, and they'll point at it for weeks.

Recipe: 1 cup flour, ยฝ cup salt, 1 tbsp cream of tartar, 1 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice, and 1 cup warm water. Stir on low heat until it forms a ball, then knead once it's cool.

Squirt paint into a gallon zip bag, seal it, tape it to the table or window, and let them squish. It's all the fun of paint with zero cleanup.

Place a leaf under paper and color over it with chunky beeswax crayons. They're easier for little hands to grip and made without the petroleum-based wax in regular crayons.

Cut an apple in half, dip it in paint, and stamp. Surprise: the core makes a star shape! Roll out a big sheet of kraft paper on the floor so there's room to make a mess.

Cozy Indoor Activities

Kitchen Helper: Baking Together

Toddlers love to "help" with stirring and pouring. A toddler tower gets them safely up to counter height so they can be part of the action.

Fall Book Basket

Swap your book basket for fall-themed books at the start of the season. It turns reading time into a mini celebration.

A sweet board book with cutouts and raised details

A sturdy board book all about fall sights, sounds, and smells

A funny squirrel story to read together as they get a little older

Your Screen-Free Fall Starter Kit

If you only grab a few things this season, these cover almost every activity above:

Keep them in one basket, and you'll always have an activity ready when the "what do we do now" moment hits. ๐Ÿ‚
